2011 was a hard year for many of us. I met many in our nation and beyond who walked through deep waters this year. Some felt stuck; unable to move ahead. They had a vision for their future, but changes in the economy and unmet expectations caused them to feel trapped and confused.

Recently I thought of Genesis 11; the chapter of the bible that is filled with confusion when the tower of Babel was built. It was a really tough period of time for God’s people. The end of chapter 11 tells the story of Abram and his father Terah with their relatives leaving their home with a vision to go to Canaan, but they got stuck in Haran; a place in between. And Terah never got out of Haran. He was stuck there. Many today feel the same way; experiencing discouragement, economic problems, and shattered dreams. But when we read about Abram in Genesis chapter 12, something radically changed.

“The LORD had said to Abram, ‘Leave your native country, your relatives, and your father’s family, and go to the land that I will show you. I will make you into a great nation. I will bless you and make you famous, and you will be a blessing to others…All the families on earth will be blessed through you.’ So Abram departed as the LORD had instructed” (Gen 12:1-4)

In Genesis 12, Abram (later called Abraham) chose to obey the voice of God and walk in faith. He refused to live like he had in Genesis 11 where he and his father and relatives got stuck. God promised him great blessing if he obeyed His voice. He responded in faith and the rest is history. And we are all beneficiaries of his faith and obedience today.

As we enter 2012, let’s walk in faith like Abram; refuse to look back, listen to His voice, and obey Him. Expect great things from God in 2012. Regardless of what 2011 was like for you, join me in 2012 as we move from Genesis 11 living to Genesis 12 faith. And those who come after us will remember our story and do the same.
