On the first day of the Green Bay Packers football team training camp in 1961, the team arrived to start a brand-new season after losing the championship the year before. Their famous coach, Vince Lombardi, shocked the team as he started with the most elemental statement. “Gentlemen,” he said, holding a pigskin in his right hand, “this is a football.” He took his team back to the basics. We must constantly go back to the basics. With a strong foundation on the rock of Christ and His Word, we will be able to stand in faith, even when storms of life are raging. Jesus said, “Everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock (Matthew 7:24-25). As we start 2023, let’s make a fresh commitment today to the spiritual discipline of daily time in His Word and prayer and expect Him to speak to us.
