A friend of mine was struggling with knowing if he was a true Christian. One night I took his Bible and showed him Romans 10:9 and told him to read it. “That if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.” He read it over and over, and suddenly faith rose up in his heart. He announced excitedly, “Now I know I am really a Christian!” Why? He was no longer basing his belief on his feelings, but on what God said in His Word. He confessed with his mouth that Jesus is Lord and experienced true salvation. What does it mean to know Jesus Christ as the Lord of our lives? Lord means: ruler, king, boss, one in complete control of our lives. We come to Christ by confessing and believing that Jesus Christ can save us from a life apart from God. In the same way a couple confesses their commitment to each other on their wedding day to begin their marriage relationship, we confess Jesus Christ as our Lord to begin and continue our relationship with God.
