The Walk to Emmaus: Part 3

By this time they were nearing Emmaus and the end of their journey. Jesus acted as if he were going on, but they begged him, “Stay the night with us, since it is getting late.” So he went home with them. As they sat down to eat, he took the bread and blessed it. Then he broke it and gave it to them. Suddenly, their eyes were opened, and they recognized him. And at that moment he disappeared! (Luke 24:28-31 NLT)

In a previous blog, we looked at the importance of encountering Jesus in His Word. In fact, the whole purpose of God’s Word: both the Old and New Testament is to reveal Jesus.

God’s Word is given to us not just so that we can see Him in the context of history. God’s Word is given to us so that we may know how to encounter Him today, in our own life! We can have the faith of Abraham and Sarah, the worshiping warrior heart of David, the prayer life of Elijah, the heart to nurture justice of Deborah, the courage of Gideon, the Holy Spirit power on the men and women of the book of Acts, the resilience of the early church, and so much more.

In these scriptures, the disciples could have been content with a good preaching that moved them. But because of their heart of hospitality, they pressed this stranger on the road to come and stay with them. They could have gone on with the “regularly scheduled program” they had planned and let this stranger continue to walk on. But they didn’t. They recognized the value of that moment and they pressed in for more, which led them to a personal encounter of fellowship with Jesus where He made Himself known to them. Too many times today the church stops short of encountering more of God because we settle for only knowing about Him in His Word. Encountering God in His Word is meant to bring us to a place of increased personal fellowship with Him. There is nothing more sweet than this fellowship with Jesus.

Jesus, we long that our times reading Your Word would lead us into deep and sweet fellowship with You. Help us go beyond good teaching into encountering You in very personal ways as You reveal Yourself to us!
